AFTERPLAY

‘It’s not the literal past, the ‘facts’ of history, that shape us, but images of the past embodied by language’
Brian Friel

Moscow, early 1920s. Andrey and Sonya meet by chance in a run-down café. They discuss their loves, losses and their thwarted, but resilient, dreams. Audience becomes voyeur in the empty cafe ́; sharing the intimacy of the characters, experiencing their loneliness and investing in their hope for a brighter future.

In Afterplay, Brian Friel (Translations; Philadelphia, Here I Come!) revisits two characters from Chekhov’s Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya. We join them 20 years later as they are given a chance to re-write their own stories. Afterplay is affecting, twisted and dexterously funny.

“The Friel play was enchanting. You have really good young actors there…I felt as if we too were part of another unwritten Chekhov play! Altogether a memorable occasion”
